1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

The Mercedes R107 is referred to as the Panzer Wagen -- a tank. It was overbuilt to ensure that the convertible would not become imminently extinct. This 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is still wearing its original and ultra-rare color named Blue Metallic. The paint is still in excellent condition with only some typical scratches on the rear deck due to the hardtop. Normally the R107 has 14” hubcaps, but we sourced some very rare 15” hubcaps and wrapped them with new Firestone tires. This is not a 13-in-a-dozen US-import with lower compression engines, but a true Euro-spec car, newly delivered in Switzerland.

The interior is still completely original. The front seats still wear the original upholstery. Partly in blue leather and Sports Check cloth, also a very rare option. Interior features include an Philips radio, manual windows, and air conditioning. The four-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 240 – km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. New sun visors and door sills were installed.

The 4.5-liter V8 features Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 190 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. A new fuel tank was installed, as well as a new fuel filter, oil filter, oil, coolant, spark plugs and spark plug wires. All bushings were replaced last year. The injectors were ultrasonic cleaned and the engine received a fresh tune up. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The car runs and drives as it should with no issues whatsoever.

Decoding the data plate reveals the following information:

387H: Blue Metallic

436: No automatic seatbelts

466: Central locking system

580: Behr Airconditioning

595: Heat-absorbing glass – Green

Overall this is truly a special 450SL in a very desirable color, ready to be enjoyed!
